AppGate Network Security, a leading provider of network security solutions, has developed a new network security infrastructure specifically for local and city councils across the UK. It has already been deployed at a major Midlands council,
and has been designed for community-based projects, flexible working and secure remote access.
The solution will give councils a flexible yet secure IT infrastructure, improving access for citizens,
employees and third parties to council services and increasing productivity whilst also ensuring regulatory
compliance in terms of security and data protection.
AppGate has partnered with Serco Solutions to develop a more robust IT infrastructure for city councils,
which will the meet evolving security needs of an increasingly mobile public sector workforce.
The AppGate solution has been designed to support upwards of 1,000 users at the council and can be used to
deliver e-learning programmes and mobile learning remotely throughout the community.
The solution gives employees secure remote access to the council network whilst on the road, increasing
overall accessibility and supporting flexible working.
With increased mobility and accessibility comes enhanced security: Councils have granularity of control,
and are able to design, implement and audit their own security policies and also standardise third party
access to ensure that sensitive data and access are closely monitored and protected.
Keith Shaw, Security Manager at Serco Solutions said, “We have worked closely with AppGate and Somerford
Associates to develop a new IT infrastructure for UK councils. Councils are now moving from a ‘fortress’ to
‘airport’-style security solution, improving third-party access and making flexible working and remote access
easier and more convenient, yet also maintaining a high degree of security and control, especially around core
business systems.
“We are hoping to develop the system further, integrating schools and library networks to create a single,
managed, resilient IT infrastructure across multiple council services for a more joined-up and coordinated
approach to IT.”
