The Checkmark System brings a quality testing and certification service to technology developers and establishes an independent standard on product effectiveness for the benefit of buyers and decision makers. Checkmark standards are continuously being developed to ensure that they are an accurate reflection of real-world situations and technology advances.

The Checkmark VPN test is designed to ensure that VPNs achieve a basic level of security performance in that they:

• Allow a secure point-to-point link between two networks
• Allow a secure point-to-point link between a roaming client and a network (optional)
• Provide authentication and access control mechanisms to restrict resource access on a per-user or per-group level
• Provide packet filtering or proxy services within the tunnel to restrict tunnel traffic to specific protocols or source/destination points
• Enforce a reasonable level of encryption and data integrity for the data contained within the VPN tunnel 6. Provide a secure key-exchange mechanism for all devices participating in a VPN

The PC Firewall certification is designed to ensure that firewalls achieve an effective level of protection against hostile attacks from outside, prevent unauthorised local applications from accessing the network, and offer sufficient documentation and administrative tools to the user.

Tests are conducted with both proprietary and standard tools, by accredited Checkmark lab engineers.
