Installing AppGate on Nokia 9300/9500

With the AppGate solution for Mobile Phones and PDAs the device is turned into something that more resembles a PC then an ordinary phone. Without problems the users can now access their e-mail account and reach their their Intranet much the same way as they would do on their PC. The information is send directly to device and do not pass any third parties and is always encrypted. There is no need for installation of new e-mail clients or additional web-browsers.

The user can authenticate themselves the same way that they usually do, using passwords, tokens etc.

In this guide assumes that the user authenticates using passwords, there are other authentication methods supported as well. Please contact your system administrator for more information.

Nokia 9300/9500

The Nokia 9300/9500 can be used together with an AppGate Security Server to achieve secure communication to E-mail servers located on an organisations internal networks.

Prerequisites

  1. A Username and Password for the AppGate Security Server. This should be obtained from the administrator of the AppGate Security Server.
  2. IP-number or hostname of the AppGate Security Server.
  3. A Username and Password for the E-mail account on the E-mail server (Exchange server). You may already have this information if you have previously used the same E-mail server, otherwise you should obtain this from the administrator of the E-mail server.
  4. The E-mail address of your E-mail account.
  5. Information on which of POP3 or IMAP the E-mail server can handle or prefers.
  6. A 9300 or a 9500 with a GSM subscription with GPRS enabled which must provide plain IP-access to the Internet. Warning: There are certain GPRS subscriptions that are limited to only web traffic. Those will not work; make sure you have full IP-access.

Step 1. Installing the AppGate client on the phone.

The easiest way to install the AppGate client is directly via the Web and through the Internet using the GPRS/Internet connection.

  1. Among all the Applications select Internet.
  2. In the menu select "Internet -> Open page"
  3. In the Location field type:

    http://www.appgate.com/downloads/AGCMobile-Nokia.jar

Observe that upper and lowercase characters are significant.
  4. When you press "Open" the jar-file will be downloaded to your phone. Follow the instructions to install it as a new application.
  5. When the installations is finished you should be able to find a new application called AppGate mobile client .

Step 2. Setting up the E-mail account parameters

In order for your 9300/9500 to be able to handle E-mail it must be told a few things about your E-mail account. Do as follows:

  1. Choose "Tools" and then Control panel -> Messaging -> AppGate
  2. At the tab General -> Appgate insert account details
  3. At the tab "General" fill in something like "Account name:" e.g. "My Email"
  4. Fill in "Your name:" give the Username and Password for the E-mail a account.
  5. Fill in your Email address: Select the tab General" and Connection type" POP3 or IMAP. Set "Incoming and outgoing server address" to 127.0.0.1

  4. Set "Authentication" to "Password".
  5. Give your password.
  6. Press "Connect"
AppGate mobile client will now establish a secure, encrypted and compressed connection with the AppGate Security Server. You may encounter a few questions about what Internet connection you want use and, at the first time, a question about accepting the AppGate Security Server "Host Key".

When the phone is connected to the Security Server it's indicated by the text "Connected" on the screen.

Using E-mail

  1. Start the application "Messaging"
  2. Select your newly created E-mail account, e.g. "My Email" under AppGate You are now communicating with the E-mail account in a secure way and can get and send E-mails as you like.

Roaming

All the AppGate clients have a unique feature called Roaming, which is very useful when using GPRS. The Roaming feature will maintain the secure connection with the Security Server even if the GPRS connection is temporary lost or inactivate. You will remain logged in on the AppGate Security Server while the client do "Suspend" and "Resume". This will save you from tedious login/password dialogues and unnecessary GPRS traffic: In the 9500 there is not possible to go from WLAn to GPRS due to a limitation in the phone. The AppGate client will automatically do "Suspend" after a while of inactivity The AppGate client will automatically do "Resume" if the E-mail reader tries to get or send E-mail.

Using Web/intranet

If your AppGate Security Server is setup for access to an intranet web site you may access it this way:

  1. Start the application "web"
  2. Enter the address: http://127.0.0.1

Contacts and calendar synchronization

This requires you to have an AppGate Security Server which has the Sync4j Module installed and configured. Contact your sys admin before you try this.

  6. Set the "Port" to "8090".
